The CC VR6 Sport and our CC VR6 4Motion have Volkswagen’s narrow-angle V-6 engine. The cylinder banks are only 10.6 degrees apart instead of the usual 60 degrees cone, allowing a more compact size. The 24-valve engine—it also has variable in the valve timing, variable intake lengths and the direct fuel injection—is rated at 280 hp at 6200 rpm and 265 lb-ft of torque at 2750 rpm.

The VR6 is still a smooth, strong engine. Combined with the six-speed "tiptronic," it responds swiftly and smoothly to throttle input. And with the CC's supple ride quality and quiet cabin (wind noise, even with frameless windows, is virtually nonexistent), it really does feel like a more premium product than the regular Passat. But why must this be a four-seater? The pointless slide-open center console in the rear could be better served by a third (if not small) seat.
